Description
The third lighthouse built in 1846 to mark the entrance of Pass Manchac. The pass was first used by Pierre Le Moyne Sieur d’Iberville in 1698,after the Indians shared their knowledge of this shortcut from the Gulf through Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas and on to Baton Rouge.
It was automated in 1941 and abandoned in 1987. Restoration work was done in 2003 but Katrina hit in 2005. This photo was taken in 2011 before, slow-moving Hurricane Isaac hit in August 2012 and caused the Lighthouse to fall into Lake Pontchartrain and is likely gone forever.
